Long-term Rentals

Penley Produce Vacation Homes

Our family of short-term and long-term rental homes are strategically located along the following five (5) miles-ish loop:

“The Cabin”

Except for “The Cabin” which is just below Mt. Pisgah about 10 minutes out Highway 151 on Chestnut Creek just below where we went to Methodist Youth Summer Camp. Walter Russell made us Sassafras Tea (later learned it could be toxic)

Sand Hill Road

The Castill’s

Mrs. Castill was Bud Patton’s next-door neighbor growing up. Over the years, Bud, Mike, and Tony mowed her yard until she passed away. Before she died, we purchased her home and let her live at home until she passed. It was renovated by Uncle Mike and is in the heart of West Asheville. There’s a multi-year waiting list for this home.

The House’s

Back in the mid-70’s, we used to ride mini-bikes with our neighbors: Joe Walker, Mark Henson, Keith Fox as well as our cousins Bobby & Ricky Purcell in the lot beside our home on Sand Hill Rd. The man who owned the lot ultimately built their retirement home in the middle of our worn-out dirt racing oval. He was a preacher whose last name was House. Thus, the name, The House’s House. This home was renovated by Uncle Mike and David Merch (local artist).

The May’s

Mr. May worked at the DMV and Mrs. May drove a hot-rod red Camero. This house was built out of cinder blocks during the 1950’s when the threat of nuclear war was real. Uncle Mike and Phillip Whitaker renovated this home which is literally a stone’s-throw from West Asheville.

The Fox’s

Mr. Fox worked for WLSO TV as an electrician. He helped wire the tower you see on the top of Mt. Pisgah. When he passed away, we purchased the home and rented it to local workers as affordable housing. Translated, folks worked for their rent. It was a good deal until we needed it for storage.

The Taylor’s

Back in the 1960’s there was a little store … Sand Hill XXX. Our bus stop was across the street at the apex of the bend in the road. Every morning, Joe, Debbie, Sheena, Tony, Holly, Jeff, Tim, Keith and his two sisters would wait on the driveway of the Taylor’s and Foxes houses. How nobody got run over is a miracle.

The Smith’s

This is a totally made-up name and have no idea who the family was that built this house. We purchased this home 20 years ago simply because the property abutted the May’s and Foxes. Who knew it had such great bones. Uncle Mike and Dale renovated it and the surrounding property has been home to wild turkeys, bear, deer, and a wide-variety of other wildlife.

The Henson’s

Mr. & Mrs. Henson had a nice home next to the Asheville School for Boy’s campus. Mark, Jeff, and Tony would go out back in the woods and hunt squirrels and rabbits. Mrs. Henson would fry them up for them … tasted like chicken. Mrs. Henson was a life-long member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church (FAUMC) and close family friends with Phyllis and Veronica Penley. When she decided to move into assisted living, PPVH purchased their home. Uncle Mike renovated it and it has been rented ever since.

The XXX’s

Confession is good for the soul … so they say. Well, when they went squirrel hunting in the woods behind the Henson’s, technically those woods belonged to the XXX. Not 100% sure it that was “approved” by owners, but they never got caught. When xxx heard Mrs. Henson was moving out, she decided it was time for her to go as well. PPVH purchased Mrs. xxx’s home as it was an obvious part of their story. Uncle Mike renovated the home, and the rabbits, squirrels, deer, bear, and other wildlife still live in harmony.

Oak Hill Parsonage

Just down the road from Oak Hill Presbyterian Church, they built a home for their preachers right beside Green Valley Road. Now I’m not naming names, but I’m pretty sure all the girls that lived next to this holy home were humming the tune, “the only boy that could ever teach me, was the son of a preacher man.” He was a good-looking kid with a wily smile. This could all be a lie … but that’s the folklore. When the church decided to sell this house, PPVH decided it needed to be part of their family of homes. Uncle Mike renovated it and it's been online for decades.

The Sanford’s House

Word had it that Terry Sanford grew up in this house. It is a simple 1950’s farmhouse. When PPVH purchased the home, Uncle Mike renovated it and even turned the detached garage into a one-bedroom unit. We rented it long-term for years but converted it to a short-term vacation rental because it was so close to downtown West Asheville.

Monte Vista Road

GranLloyd’s

Built in late 1920’s, GranLloyd and Grannie Laura built what is now the “heartbeat” of Penley Produce Vacation Rentals. The views, the hayfield, the proximity to all things WNC … is truly one-of-a-kind. Historic yet renovated to accommodate vacations, weddings, and long-term relocations. This home is available for month-to-month rental.

Aunt Patsy’s

Built in the 1960, Uncle Carroll and Aunt Patsy constructed one of the first homes in the area to have a “finished” basement, including: bathroom, buck stove, fireplace, bar area, family room, and bedrooms for the kids to have “spend the nights.” Complete with Black lights, mirror balls, lava lamps, and posters. Not sure if it was decorated for the kids or the “hippy” adults. What amazing views!!!

NOTE: THIS HOME HAS BEEN CONDEMED BY NC DOT. WE ARE CURRENTLY NEGOTIATING TO RE-PURPOSE/REUSE/MOVE THE VACATED STRUCTURE TO REDUCE IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT & LANDFILL. MORE TO COME.

Liberty Road

(near Liberty Baptist Church)

The Warren’s

Kathy Warren grew up in this home and played the organ at Francis Asbury United Methodist Church. When she decided to move away, PPVH added this home to the family. Bud and Uncle Mike renovated and rented it for decades to come. Uncle Mike upfitted this property for short-term vacation rentals, but it is also available for month-to-month rental as well.

Uncle Robert’s

Uncle Robert is best known for the Candler Super Market, but more specifically for the Candler Super Market Sausage. Robert Penley (aka E.R.) also farmed beside GranLloyd’s land. They were brothers who had a complicated relationship to say the least … possibly because Lloyd was Grannie Penley’s favorite. None the less, once PPVH purchased this home, Uncle Mike renovated it and it’s been occupied by rental clients for decades.

Don Penley’s

Don was Uncle Robert’s son, and PPVH bought his home when he passed. Back in the day, Uncle Robert grew tomatoes, black berries, and strawberries where Don built his house. It is now one of our long-term rentals.

Donna Penley’s

Donna is Don’s daughter and Uncle Robert’s granddaughter. When Don passed, Donna moved across the street, so PPVH took ownership of her home. Uncle Mike and Phil Whitaker renovated this home for long-term rental.

Charlotte Ann Lane

Back in the late 80’s, PPVH purchased this land from the Young’s who lived just down Liberty Road. Uncle Mike named this set of homes after his daughter Charlotte Ann. The first two duplexes were built by Uncle Mike and Kent Cole in the 1990s. Later, the project was completed with three more duplexes.

NOTE: THESE TEN (10) HOMES WERE CONDEMED BY NC DOT. WHILE THEY ARE NOW GONE, WE SO APPRECIATE THE HISTORY AND FRIENDSHIPS DEVELOPED BY SOME OF OUR MOST LOYAL RESIDENTS.

The Lewis’

Bob Lewis was a major part of Hominy Valley Little League and now has a recreational park named in his honor. Mike and Alice were high school sweethearts and ultimately got married. After Mike’s parents passed, PPVH bought the Lewis homeplace and Uncle Mike renovated it for long-term rental. What amazing views!!

The Harkin’s

The Lewis’ were next door neighbors to Jim & Betty Harkins who had three boys: Rod, Steve, and Wes. All three had exceptional talents: music, engineering, and photography. When Jim passed and Mrs. Harkins was ready to downsize, PPVH purchased their home and Uncle Mike renovated it for short-term vacation rentals. This home is also available month-to-month. What amazing views!!!

The XXX’s

The Harkins were next door neighbors to the XXX. When Mrs XXX passed, PPVH purchased their home and Uncle Mike renovated it for long-term rental. What amazing views.

Liberty Road Apartments

Built in late 1980’s by Vic Workman on a piece of property sold to Bud & Phyllis from the Russell’s across the street these apartments were PPVH’s first new construction rental project. It was built using an 18% interest rate credit card with a $50k credit line. Asheville Savings & Loan gave us the money to finish the project at 10% for 15 years. Bud, Phyllis, and Uncle Mike have kept these four homes 99% occupied for over 30+ years. So many clients have shared stories of great memories, and peaceful living! A waiting list doesn’t exist because residents simply pass the leases to friends/family. You gotta know someone who lives at LRA to get next dibs.

The Betty

There’s a long and unbelievable story about how Uncle Mike built “The Betty” which was designed by Mrs. Harkins as her perfect “downsized” home. It has all the ADA suggestions and particulars by Mrs. Harkins to keep things simple and easy. She lived here until she moved to assisted living. Since then, Uncle Mike has rented it as a one-bedroom short-term vacation rental. This home is available for month-to-month rental as well.

Asbury Road Apartments

This property was purchased from the Roberson Family (we can’t remember for sure … maybe the Holcomb’s) and was designed for the “modern” family. While not duplexes, the units are “paired” so parents/siblings or grandparents/grandkids could live nearby but NOT in the same household. The layouts are like LRA and have the same 99% occupancy rate.
